Resource Recovery Group is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Acting Chief Executive Officer, Brendan Doherty. Brendan succeeds Tim Youé, who resigned in January, and will guide Resource Recovery Group into a new era with a commitment to continue realising our vision to maximise resource recovery and minimise climate impact.

Resource Recovery Group is proud to partner up with the City of Wanneroo in recovering their recyclables at our leading Materials Recovery Facility. Luke waved down City of Waneroo’s Truck Operator, Glen, and he was more than happy to park “Karli” at the entrance to Resource Recovery Group’s facility. It’s great to see Glen’s “Karli” unloading resources to be streamed, sorted, and sent to our processing partners.

Every month, more than 1000kgs of batteries enter Resource Recovery Group's Material Recovery Facility, so we have published a simple video of an actual battery fire on the floor that conveys our staff's excellent response time, efficient safety procedures and the unnecessary risks that incorrect disposal of batteries put on waste industry workers Australia-wide.

As the new Waste Education Officer at Resource Recovery Group, I am excited to have commenced Tours of our Canning Vale Centre for our Member Councils as well as the general community! The past two months have flown by, and I’ve enjoyed learning about the various operations at each facility, exploring the site and getting to know the team.

In accordance with section 5.55 of the Local Government Act 1995, public notice is given that the Resource Recovery Group 2021-2022 Annual Report was adopted by Council on 15 December 2022 and is now available to the public.

Resource Recovery Group’s Canning Vale Centre currently has over 90,000 tonnes per annum spare capacity to process Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) waste. Recent media reports have claimed that several WA councils are choosing Waste-to-Energy over FOGO – the Food Organics, Garden Organics bin system that the WA State Government has recommended all councils adopt by 2025. Part of the justification for this decision, or delay in adopting FOGO, is that Perth/Peel does not currently have the FOGO processing capacity. This is simply not true.

The Hon Minister for Environment, Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA awarded the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council the 2021 WA Waste Award last Wednesday night for its outstanding commitment to community waste reduction, reuse and recycling over 20 years.

A slow-speed shedder is the latest equipment acquired to help process a significant proportion of Perth’s Food Organic and Garden Organic (FOGO) waste.

A bin tagging program will commence mid-February in selected households across the region to help educate residents to ‘recycle right’. Bin tagging is part of the rollout of the new 3-bin FOGO system that was implemented during 2019 in the City of Melville, City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle.

Late yesterday the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) and Cleanaway reached agreement on a contract for SMRC to receive and sort at least 50,000 tonnes per annum of kerbside recyclables commencing Monday 17 February.

For the past couple of months, the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) has been helping to recycle materials that were destined for the Cleanaway MRF destroyed by fire.

The Infinity Awards acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding achievements of Western Australians working towards a better waste future through improved waste practices and innovative waste solutions. This year’s awards saw a record number of nominations with more than 100 entries from organisations and individuals throughout Western Australia across a range of different categories.

The SMRC has been recognised for its commitment to workplace safety, recently receiving two industry awards. On 2 April the SMRC accepted a Gold Diligence in safety award from LGIS CEO Jonathan Seth. Mr Seth congratulated the SMRC and RRRC for ongoing improvements, which have resulted in a highly commendable safety rating.
